The news from North and South Korea has been all good lately. The North Korean dictator, Kim Jong Un, has agreed to meet with President Trump, has met with South Korean President Moon, and has even traveled to South Korea; being the first North Korean leader to do so since the Korean War armistice in 1953. Better yet, President Moon and Leader Kim Jong Un have vowed to end the Korean War after a 65 year standoff under the 1953 armistice.
This all sounds good and it is. The world should welcome peace talks and any prospects for lasting peace and reunification of a denuclearized Korean peninsula. But, there is good reason for skepticism.
North Korea has made many promises before that it has always broken. Efforts at talks between North Korea and South Korea have failed many times in the past.
Kim Jong Un is a homicidal maniac who kills family members, starves peasants and runs a gulag of prison camps that engage in torture and slave labor. Kim cannot be trusted. This article also reveals that Kim Jong Un’s nuclear test site inside a mountain has collapsed.
Kim cannot continue to test nuclear weapons in the old site and it make take months or years to build a new one. This is an impediment to the miniaturization and ruggedizatiion of the nuclear warheads needed to mount on ICBMs that could pose an existential threat to the U.S.
Perhaps Kim’s motives are sincere and we should all give peace a chance. Yet, it’s wise to be on guard and to consider that Kim may just be playing for time until a new nuclear test site is ready.
